Postmedia Network Inc., which recently purchased Canwest's publishing division, has reported third-quarter gains this fiscal year. The newspaper chain reported an overall revenue increase of one per cent. Despite the continued loss of classified, retail and insert ads, the company experienced a two per cent growth in advertising revenue for the print publication. Meanwhile, digital media revenues decreased 16 per cent, a decline that Postmedia CEO Paul Godfrey attributed to “a change in allocation between reporting segments."
The Canadian print newspaper market is much more buoyant than that in the United States. In 2009, Canadian ad revenues for print newspapers were down 11% (with the media market) vs. the U.S. which was down 29%. Experts predict, that in the U.S., print newspaper revenues will decline in 2010 while in Canada, revenues are expect to grow. The Canadian market is distinctive. The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers will host the 40th annual IFRA industry expo on October 6 to 8 in Hamburg. The two day event will feature a variety of seminars, panel discussions and social events. A week-long study tour covering the latest trends in printing will take palce from Vienna to Hamburg on September 27 to October 2 prior to the expo.
