Postmedia Network Inc. has launched its new corporate website www.postmedia.com. The site features a company profile, press releases and a new logo created for the company by Rethink Toronto. Paul Godfrey, President and Chief Executive Officer of Postmedia Network described the colourful new design as “bold and dynamic … something that exemplifies a first to the future view.”

Ron Brock, a long time employee of the Enterprise-Bulletin (ON), passed away on August 24 at the age of 88. Following in the footsteps of two of his brothers Brock joined the Bulletin in 1938, setting lines of type in the compositing department. Brock stayed at the Bulletin for 30 years, working his way up the ranks to the position of advertising manager.

Afternoon discussion sessions will give members an opportunity to meet with MPPs and various ministers to talk about public policy issues relevant to the community newspaper industry. A Publisher’s Reception will be held following the meetings.

Mark Warner, president of Black Press Vancouver Island, announced that Joanna Ross will become the new publisher at the Comox Valley Record (BC) effective September 27. Ross takes over the position from Nathan Weathington who was recently appointed as the new publisher at The Morning Star in Vernon, B.C.

Newspapers across the country are experiencing healthy financial growth this quarter. Vancouver-based newspaper publisher Glacier Media Inc. attributed increased revenues to larger advertising revenue and the general economic revival of the industry. FP Canadian Newspapers Limited Partnership (FPLP) also reported increased second quarter earnings as a result of a 5.3% reduction in operating expenses such as lower newsprint and delivery costs. Quebecor, which controls the Videotron cable company and the Sun Media chain of newspapers, reported a 5 percent rise in revenue.

Total advertising revenue for Canadian community newspapers in 2009 was $1.19 billion according to the latest year-end report commissioned by the CCNA. Data was collected in early July 2010 from a number of sources, including corporate chains, independently owned newspapers, and regional newspaper associations affiliated with the CCNA. The study found that chains account for 80.7 percent of print advertising revenue and 95.2 percent of online revenues.

In British Columbia, the Trail-Rossland News has been re-launched as the Rossland News. The changes come after the competing newspaper, the Trail Daily Times, was purchased by Black Press, which already owns the Trail-Rossland News. The free weekly paper will continue to cover the same community stories but will focus more exclusively on Rossland. Black Press recently acquired a number of newspapers from Glacier Media throughout B.C. and Alberta including the Trail Daily Times which will continue to operate in Silver City as a sister paper to the Rossland News.

Well respected journalist David McKay has died at the age of 87. McKay began his 44 year journalism career at the Canadian Press in Halifax before joining the Moncton Times & Transcript where he went on to work for 19 years. In 1965 he took the position of editor at Sackville Tribune-Post where he later became a co-owner of the paper.

Former reporter and editor Jim Amos has passed away at the age of 52. Amos began his career at the Revelstoke Review before travelling to Campbell River in the early 1990s to join the Courier-Islander. Starting as a photographer and darkroom technician Amos quickly graduated to reporter and then editor at the BC community paper. Later on in his career Amos covered news at the Comox Valley Echo before accepting a position on to the provincial government's Public Affairs Bureau.

The modified guidelines for calculating bundled and hybrid print and digital newspaper sales are only in effect for newspapers in the U.S., not in Canada. There have been no comparable rule changes for the Canadian market.

Renowned Canadian newsman Bruce Garvey has passed away at the age of 70. Garvey spent almost 50 years working as a journalist, starting his career with the Stratford Beacon-Herald at the age of 21. He later worked at the Montreal Gazette and United Press International before joining the Toronto Star in 1967. In 1977, Garvey made the transition to television news, first at the CBC and later with Global. Former editor of the Star Peter C. Newman described Garvey as “one of the great journalists of his generation."

The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) has released its annual world press trends update. According to the report, world-wide newspaper circulation fell only 0.8 percent in 2009 a small decline, given the depth of the recession, and in comparison with declines in other industries. The report also forecasts a strong growth in print advertising with global revenues predicted to increase 3.5 percent worldwide.
