This feature photo by Greg Hoekstra of the Haliburton County Echo combines a great subject with strong composition, cropping and excellent use of colour. Hoekstra captured the young girl’s excitement using an off-centre composition along with a shallow depth of field to eliminate any background distraction, making it a very strong image. This photo won first place in the under-4,000 circulation class in the 2009 CCNA Better Newspapers Competition.
